Irving was founded in 1903 by Otto Schulze and Otis Brown. Fun fact…. Irving, Texas, is believed by local historians to be named after Netta Barcus Brown’s (wife of Otis Brown) favorite author, Washington Irving.

Washington Irving, an American short-story writer and essayist of the early 19th century, is known for his short stories “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Both stories appear in his collection, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Irving, the town, not the person, was finally incorporated April 14, 1914, with Otis Brown as the first mayor.

Located in the north-west suburb of Dallas, today Irving is noted for its racial and ethnic diversity and ranks as one of the most diverse cities in the United States.
